The Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) is one of the last strongholds for Lar gibbons in Asia. However, poaching and habitat loss are major threats to this species in WEFCOM, as they are canopy dwellers, rarely setting foot on the forest floor. They are classified as Endangered by IUCN. Therefore, to protect and potentially increase the population of Lar gibbons in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary which is one of protected areas in WEFCOM. Khao Nang Rum Wildlife Research Station (KNR), Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation in collaboration with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand Program, arranged a workshop of “Gibbon Monitoring System in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary” during November 13 - 18, 2016 at Khao Nang Rum Wildlife Research Station. The purpose is to implement a gibbon monitoring system in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. There are 11 KNR research assistants and staff participated in this workshop. Prof. Dr. Warren Y. Brockelman, the first researcher who started a study of gibbon in Khao Yai National Park, Dr. Chanpen Saralamba, a lecturer from Mahidol University and Ms. Mayuree Umponjan, WCS Thailand staff delivered a lecture about “Triangulation” which is a technique of gibbon population and density estimation. Participants received the training materials at the registration. Prof. Dr. Warren Y. Brockelman, the first researcher who started a study of gibbon in Khao Yai National Park, and Dr. Chanpen Saralamba, a lecturer from Mahidol University delivered lectures about “The Ecology of Lar Gibbons” and “Triangulation” which is methods of gibbon density estimation. Participants have learnt and practiced in gibbon survey by using triangulation. They will then bring data to estimate for Lar gibbon population size and density.
