Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand, among other organizations and media have witnessed the “Destruction of Confiscated Ivory in Thailand 2015”, permitted by the cabinet. The ceremony, presided over by Prime Minister of Thailand: Prayut Chan-o-cha, is an expression of Thai government’s commitment and intention to protect and fight against elephant poaching and illegal ivory trade to 180 CITES member countries, according to the national ivory action plans (amendment).
The massive amount of contraband is 2,712.04 kg in total. Some parts (540.67 kg) have been selected for educational purposes regarding as science, arts and culture for the government departments, academic institutions, museums and the National Science Museum. For the rest (2,155.17 kg), they are smashed by an industrial rock crusher before being incinerated in the afternoon, and getting properly buried.
