Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary (UMP) has a remarkably attractive landscape, featuring the Thee Lor Sue waterfall, a perennial stream that forms a large waterfall flowing down from steep cliffs, making it a popular tourist attraction.
UMP consists of 4 management zones with 15 ranger stations and 70 patrol rangers (7 patrol teams). Smart Patrol System was started in the area in 2010. However, the patrol rangers are insufficient for the number of ranger stations. Additionally, some rangers have to work in villages, volunteer, and work in public relations.

Law Enforcement within the Area
Overall Result
Law enforcement trainings have been held in UMP annually. The lessons include proper use of GPS, digital camera, and compass, and practicing patrol techniques. Moreover, facilities for patrol operations, such as meeting room, field gear and food supply storage were also improved by WCS.

Overall, from 2010 to 2015, most of UMP area was patrolled thoroughly, with 293 trips in total. A monthly patrol meeting is held in UMP in which rangers are required to report their results and decisions are made for the patrol mission next month. However, there had been no facilities until 2012, when their construction was completed. This construction was supported by WCS Thailand.

Apart from patrols, there are two checkpoints (Huai Plu and Huai layyanoi) located between protected areas and the community. They were constructed for checking passing vehicles. This is another example of area guarding.

Next target
There are various kinds of threats in UMP because it is encompassed with villages located dispersedly along roads throughout the area. Everything mentioned above has motivated offenders to illegally get inside the sanctuary. Therefore, intelligence gathering is important because it will save patrol rangers time and will enhance patrol performance. Moreover, patrol database development is important, similar to Thungyai East Wildlife Sanctuary’s target, because it will be able to be used to improve patrol activity and will lead to successful threat control and management.
